Spring weather has finally arrived and with the increase in temperature comes an increase in the number of motorcycles on the road. In addition to taking precautions to avoid accidents with vehicles and other motorcycles, riders must also be cautious of theft. According to a National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) report, motorcycle theft declined by about 1 percent from 2011 to 2012, with 46,061 stolen bikes in 2012, compared to 46, 667 in 2011. Unfortunately, the NICB report indicated that the recovery rate for stolen motorcycles in 2012 was just 39 percent. Among the 548 different motorcycle makes that were stolen in 2012, below are the top 10 most stolen types of bikes:

  1. Honda – 9,082 thefts
  2. Yamaha – 7,517 thefts
  3. Suzuki – 7,017 thefts
  4. Kawasaki – 4,839 thefts
  5. Harley Davidson – 3,755 thefts
  6. Taotao – 914 thefts
  7. Kymco – 496 thefts
  8. KTM – 442 thefts
  9. BaShan – 383 thefts
  10. Ducati – 329 thefts
